Three Chinese navy ships will dock in Brisbane for the next five days.

The Luyang Class destroyer Jinan, the Jiangkai Class frigate Yiyang and the Fuchi Class replenishment ship Qindaohu are expected to arrive at the River City on Saturday.

The Chinese People's Liberation Army-Navy ships took part in counter-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden last year before visiting more than a dozen countries.

Queensland is one of the last places the group will visit before returning home.

Australia's Chief of Navy Vice Admiral Tim Barrett said the visit was a good opportunity for navies from both countries to better understand how each operated.
