Two sisters who saved their dad after he caught on fire have been honoured as some of Melbourne’s bravest children.

Fifty-one children were today awarded for keeping their cool in the face of chaos as they found themselves in unthinkable situations.

Ebony and Georgia found their dad on fire in their family home after he caught alight trying to start a fire in their fireplace.

He suffered severe burns from his neck to his legs.

“They were a lot calmer than I was at that point, put it that way,” Denis told 9NEWS of his daughters’ bravery.

Another junior honouree, Samaria Samuel, called Triple Zero when she caught a stranger inside her home brandishing a knife.

“The situation could have turned out much much worse, and I’m just really grateful that I’m okay,” she said.

The Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA) receives about 2.5 million emergency calls every year.

“It just shows if you do something great something will come and you can get a great award,” fellow award recipient Omid Hamadi said.
