Children flee Sydney park as shooter opens fire

Children as young as six were forced to run for their lives when shots rang out at a park in Sydney’s south-west in a suspected drive-by shooting last night.

The children were taking part in soccer training at a sports field on Lowana Street, Villawood when the shooting occurred just after 6.15pm.

A witness told 9NEWS a man opened fire from a car about 20m from the field before driving away.

Police and emergency services attended the scene and found a 20-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to both legs.

The man, who is known to police, was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Police believe the attack was targeted and want to speak to a man as part of their investigation.

He has been described as being of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern appearance, about 25 years old, between 175 and 180cm tall, with a black beard.                                                         

The man was last seen wearing dark hooded jumper and light coloured tracksuit pants and driving a dark-coloured station wagon.
