A grandfather has been stabbed to death trying to stop an alleged domestic dispute in his neighbour's house in western Sydney.

Kima Sina, 50, died at the scene after he was stabbed a number of times in the chest at the home in Waikanda Crescent, Whalan, about 5.30pm yesterday.

A 19-year-old man was allegedly fighting with people known to him, including his mother, when Sina intervened and was fatally stabbed.

"He was trying to help. Trying to help a bad situation. It was just awful," one witness told 9NEWS.

The woman and child in the townhouse were not injured.

The accused, Billy Krey, was charged with murder and refused bail.

Appearing in court via videolink, Mr Krey sat with his arms folded shivering and shaking.  He didn't apply for bail and is being kept under watch in a cell on his own.

The lawyer for the accused told 9NEWS his client is "finding difficult to adjust" because this is his first time in custody.
