Dignitaries from six countries have held a service to remember the 19 Australians killed during the midget submarine attack on Sydney Harbour 73 years ago.

Two British and six Japanese personnel also perished in the 1942 incident, when a torpedo fired by the Japanese subs missed its intended target, the USS Chicago, and hit the ferry HMAS Kuttabul, which had been converted to provide sailor accommodation.

The ceremony on Monday in Sydney's Woolloomooloo was attended by relatives of those lost, as well as Assistant Minister for Defence Stuart Robert, senior Royal Australian Navy personnel and representatives from Japan, the United States, New Zealand, Britain and the Netherlands.
