P-plater casually digs in boot of fireball ute

A NSW P-plate driver has been filmed casually digging in the boot of his Holden ute as it is erupted in a fireball.

The incredible footage of the Central Coast Highway blaze has stunned viewers, as the young man appeared to be grabbing a bulky item from the ute as it was engulfed by flames.

While some suspected the man was rescuing golf clubs from the burning vehicle, it has been speculated on social media that the item was actually a tank used for airbag suspension.

The video shows the driver seemingly oblivious to the burning wreck as he digs around, until a passer-by shouts a warning, forcing him to abandon the item and walk away.

The scene unfolded about 6pm on Wednesday at the highway's intersection with Reeds Rd in Wamberal, the Central Coast Express Advocate reports.

Businessman Geoff Wardlaw, who filmed the incident, told the newspaper the car was shrouded in flames and smoke within minutes.

It is suspected the fire, which was eventually extinguished by firefighters, was caused by an electrical fault.
