'Terrifying' stabbing outside Sydney nightclub a targeted attack, police say

A "terrifying" stabbing outside a nightclub in inner Sydney earlier this year appears to be a targeted attack, police say.

Shortly after 3am on Saturday, July 29, police were called to Oxford Street in Surry Hills after reports of a stabbing.

A 25-year-old man outside a nightclub was reportedly approached by a number of men armed with knives, and stabbed multiple times.

A 34-year-old man who tried to help the victim was also stabbed.

The armed men fled and were last seen running south down Foley Street.

The younger stabbing victim was driven to hospital by friends, while paramedics treated the older man and took him to hospital.

Both have since been released from care. Police say they are not known to each other.

Detective Inspector Joel Best said it was not believed to be a random act of violence.

"All the information we have so far is that it was a targeted attack," he said.

He called for people who knew those involved to come forward.

The 25-year-old, he said, was not at this stage assisting police with the investigation.

Police have now released CCTV of three men they believe may be able to help with their inquiries.

The three men are described as being slim, of African appearance, and about 170cm to 180cm tall.

The first man is shown wearing a dark hooded jumper, dark pants, and white shoes.

The second is wearing a dark hooded jumper, dark pants, and black shoes.

The third is wearing a dark hooded jumper, white shorts, and black shoes.
