One punch attacker jailed for six months over Chapel Street assault

Powered by

Shocking CCTV captured the moment a one-punch offender almost stole the life of an unsuspecting passer-by in Melbourne last year, as a judge jailed him for six months.

Queensland man Ryan Parle was on a night out on December 17 when he was struck down on Chapel Street and left with a fractured skull and bleeding from the brain.

His attacker, Matthew O’Callaghan, 29, was on Friday sentenced to six months behind bars for the unprovoked attack after pleading guilty to affray and recklessly causing serious injury.

CCTV, which was shown in full to the court, was obtained by the Herald Sun.

It shows the victim walking along the busy Melbourne street and exchanging words with O’Callaghan before one of the offender’s friends delivers a headbutt.

The attacker can then be seen striking Mr Parle, who falls face-first onto the street.

O’Callaghan walks off after delivering the blow, while horrified onlookers rush to help Mr Parle.

He also received an 18-month community corrections order following the jail sentence.
