Blanchett strokes award, mocks actor on stage

Cate Blanchett stroked her new trophy in a sexually suggestive manner and mocked a fellow actor in a unusual acceptance speech at the Screen Actors Guild Awards overnight.

The 44-year-old Australian, who is now expected to win an Oscar after picking up the Golden Globe and SAG awards for best actress, has been hailed for her "wonderful" out-of-the-ordinary acceptance speech at the ceremony.

"For those who voted for me, I thank you. And for those who didn't, better luck next time," she said in a deadpan tone to laughter and applause from the crowd.

Her joke was immediately followed by a deep exhale while she bizarrely gripped the statue and quickly stroked up and down several times.

The Blue Jasmine actress started her speech by scoffing at Matthew McConaughey for his rambling comments when he accepted the statue for best actor for his role in Dallas Buyers Club.

After a couple of seconds, Blanchett was shocked to have the teleprompter counting down until she would be played off.

"Twenty-nine seconds? Matthew McConaughey spoke about Neptune and I think I can have five seconds," she joked to raucous applause.

Her success so far for her role in the Woody Allen film has made her the favourite for the Academy Awards in March.
