Australians would no longer have to fork over excessive credit card surcharges under draft laws that have cleared the lower house.

Legislation to ban merchants from charging consumers more than the cost of card transactions passed the House of Representatives on Thursday with bipartisan support.

Assistant Minister to the Treasurer Alex Hawke told parliament businesses that made profits while pretending to recover costs were misleading and frustrating consumers.
