Driver fights for life after car torn in half

A motorist is fighting for life after crashing his car on the Mallee Highway in South Australia, with the impact tearing the vehicle in half.

Emergency crews are on the scene at Elwomple after the crash occurred at 5.30am this morning.

Paramedics arrived to find the Ford Falcon ripped in two pieces, with the driver, aged in his 40s, trapped in the remains.

The man was flown to Flinders Medical Centre where he remains in a critical condition.

The major crash unit has been called to assess the scene.

Up to 96 people, involved in 89 crashes, have died on South Australian roads this year, with 554 people left seriously injured.

This compares to 82 deaths by this time last year and a total of 86 fatalities in 2016.

‘Operation Safe Holidays’ was launched on December 15 and will run until midnight on January 1, 2018.
