A woman has died after being hit by a car on the Bruce Highway at Caboolture north of Brisbane.

It's understood the woman, believed to be from Townsville and aged in her 30s, was hit by a passing vehicle after she pulled over and got out of her own car on a highway on-ramp about 4am on Monday.

She had taken a cab to a service station with a man she was travelling with after running out of fuel.

She was crossing the road to return to her car when she was struck.

She was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital suffering multiple injuries but later died.

The driver of the vehicle that struck her is being treated for shock.

Southbound lanes of the highway before the Bribie Island turn-off were closed but have since reopened.
