Man charged over alleged street racing crash in Sydney's south-west

Police have charged a 21-year-old man over a suspected street race that ended in a crash in Sydney’s south-west yesterday, leaving four people injured.

The man was allegedly driving a black Nissan that was racing a red Toyota Corolla on the Hume Highway at Cabramatta, when the Corolla crashed through the fence of a home and flipped about 12.30am.

The driver of the Corolla and two of his passengers managed to free themselves and suffered minor injuries, but one passenger in the front seat was trapped.

Emergency services worked to free the trapped passenger, who was then taken to hospital in a stable condition 

“I heard the fence go, and I never expected to walk out and see a car upside down, on the lawn, with four young people in it,” witness Heather Stein told 9NEWS.

The 21-year-old Nissan driver allegedly failed to stop and fled the scene, and police later found the empty car in a nearby hotel car park about 2pm. 

About 5.15pm, the man attended Cabramatta Police Station and was arrested. 

He has since been charged with organising or promoting a race between vehicles, driving recklessly or furiously, failing to stop and assist after impact causing injury and negligent driving.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at the Liverpool Local Court on May 16.
