Car crashes into shop in Melbourne’s north-east

A shop owner has had an unusual start to her morning - discovering a car had veered off the road and crashed into her shop in Mount Evelyn.

Mount Evelyn Fire Brigade were called to MikkiB Fashion on Wray Crescent about 6.15am this morning after reports a vehicle had crashed into a store window.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the car, was taken to hospital for observation.

Luke Roy, Lieutenant with the Mount Evelyn Fire Brigade, said the damage appeared to be structural only, however SES are undertaking a more comprehensive risk assessment on the building.

“In terms of structural collapse, we are concerned there is some street-facing damage so we are worried about debris falling onto the roadside,” he said.

“Given the age of the building, there are also concerns regarding asbestos.”

The shop’s owner, Michelle Puckey, said she hoped the shop would be up and running again before the weekend.

“The shop hasn’t been compromised, so hopefully it’s business as usual,” Ms Puckey said.

“The stock inside the shop doesn’t look like it has been damaged.”

Police and SES members are investigating.
