A car has crashed into a northern toll plaza on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, causing major traffic delays.

At about 6.30am the driver somehow sandwiched the four-wheel drive in an unused toll booth at the entrance to the Cahill Expressway, pushing the booth into the bus lane.

The driver and passenger have since been freed by emergency crews and taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for further medical checks.

Their injuries are not considered to be life threatening.

The incident caused major traffic delays, which are now clearing.

It was not the only accident on the Harbour Bridge this morning, at 6.40am a car travelling north on the Western Distributor rolled near the southern toll booths.

That vehicle has since been towed, and the driver was uninjured.
