City of Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp slammed the vandalism, stressing any kind of damage would not be tolerated.

"Vandalism of anything is something we find abhorrent and we just don't tolerate," she said.

A security guard overnight patrolled a Captain Cook statue in St Kilda, which was subject to vandalism in the lead up to Australia Day two years ago.
