'Candyman' wins Supercar injunction

Candyman Travers Beynon has had a win in court after a $6m sponsorship deal with a Supercar racing team, including grid girls and after-parties, went sour.

The controversial tobacco tycoon successfully argued in Brisbane’s Supreme Court today for an injunction against Candyman-branded racing cars competing in this weekend’s Virgin Australia Supercar Championship.

Mr Beynon claims Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport (LDM) reneged on a contract to enter a “racy” Candyman team in the Supercar event with grid girls and “exclusive” after-parties.

Mr Beynon alleges LDM failed to deliver on what it promised in return for his sponsorship, “leaving the pit crew and drivers in limbo, dozens of casual employees out of a job and the sport without a new spectacle”, The Courier Mail reports.

A judge ruled LDM reimburse Mr Beynon for the $250,000 he had already paid in sponsorship money.

According to The Courier Mail, lawyers for LDM wrote in court documents the contract was “expressly” for branding of Mr Beynon’s tobacco business Free¬choice, which had been prohibited by V8 Supercars.

They denied LDM had agreed to brand the cars as Travers Beynon Racing instead.
