Mum of three jailed over $300k cancer fraud

A cancer conwoman who defrauded family and friends of more than $300,000 has been has been sentenced to four years behind bars.

Kelly Val Smith, 40, asked relatives for loans and donations to fund her treatment for cancer – a disease she never had – between 2012 and 2015.

The mother of three promised to pay them back millions, using forged documents.

Her victims, who packed the courtroom for today's sentencing, say they're relieved Smith will serve at least two years jail.

"Her actions were evil, as far as we're concerned," Michelle Ingley-Smith said.

"As a family, this doesn't end for us, we still have relationships that still need repairing."

Friend Sharon Southhall said she was happy with the outcome.

"The whole time she's in there, we get peace," she said.

"It's affected all of us, all our family, relationships, everything, so it's been really hard."

Smith pleaded guilty to deception and dishonestly dealing with documents, after striking a plea bargain with prosecutors earlier this year.

Her victims say there's still one question which hasn't been answered – what has she done with their money?

"She's never given anyone an explanation," Ms Ingley-Smith said.

"Those kind of questions we've kind of resolved ourselves that we won't get answered."
