Flooding forces closure of several Canberra roads

Flooding across northern Canberra has forced the closure of several roads, including a major highway that allows trucks to bypass the city.

Canberra received 36.4mm rain in the two hours after 9am today, on top of heavy rain falling overnight.

Police have warned drivers the Majura Parkway is temporarily closed and there is localised flooding across the capital's northern suburbs, which should be avoided.

The ACT State Emergency Service has received more than 100 calls for help as of midday, with most of the calls for localised flooding.

"The ACT Emergency Services Agency warns Canberra residents to stay off roads during the current heavy rainfall,” a statement said.

"Do not drive into flood waters. If driving becomes too difficult pull over safely to the side of the road and wait until conditions improve.

"The public are also advise to keep clear of waterways, which are likely to experience flash flooding in current conditions. When flooded waterways can become unpredictable and dangerous."

More rain is in the forecast for the Canberra area tomorrow, although only 6mm of rain is expected.
