Canberra set to get more politicians

Canberra is a step closer to having even more politicians after the ACT opposition voted to expand the territory's Legislative Assembly.

The Canberra Liberals voted at a policy convention on Wednesday night in favour of expanding the assembly from 17 to 25 members.

Opposition leader Jeremy Hanson said it was a historic decision.

"It means the structure of government and politics in the ACT will change," he said in a statement.

Despite being the home of federal parliament, the ACT has fewer politicians of its own than any other jurisdiction.

Mr Hanson will now work with Chief Minister Katy Gallagher to bring an expansion proposal to a vote in the assembly.

Any boost to the size needs a two-thirds majority vote, meaning the eight Labor government MLAs and eight Liberals have to agree on a proposal.

An inquiry headed by the territory's electoral commissioner recommended the assembly expand to 25 members at the next election in 2016, then to 35 members in 2020.
