Canberra remembers Anzacs at dawn
CANBERRA'S CENTENARY DAWN SERVICE AT THE AUSTRALIAN WAR MEMORIAL
* HOW MANY: An estimated record 120,000 people gathered around the Australian War Memorial. Police say fewer but still a record.
* WHO WAS THERE: Administrator of the Commonwealth, Victorian governor Alex Chernov, diplomats. Governor-General Peter Cosgrove is in Wellington and Prime Minister Tony Abbott is at Gallipoli.
* INTERESTING FACT: The dawn service opened with the sound of a didgeridoo played by Able Seaman Alan Patterson, a member of the Gunggandji people, standing on the war memorial parapet.
* WHAT WAS OFFICIALLY SAID: "They were through fate and bloody circumstance Anzacs by name but more essentially men and women changed forever by war." Army chief Lieutenant General David Morrison.
* WHAT ELSE WAS SAID: "A hundred years on, we do think back and I do myself, the sacrifices and courage and the tenacity of those original Anzacs. That mateship is still very much alive in the Australian Defence Force." Victoria Cross recipient Corporal Dan Keighran.
