A banana costume-wearing driver is wanted by police after he allegedly did burnouts and injured a man in the process in Canberra.

Emergency services were called to Copper Crescent in Beard about 9.10pm yesterday over reports a man had been hit by a tyre that came loose from a car doing burnouts.

Paramedics treated the 21-year-old man and took him to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

They believe he had been wearing a "banana costume and a balaclava at the time".
