Camper injured in hit-and-run in NSW

A man is in critical condition after a hit-and-run driver ran him over while he was sleeping at a camp site in NSW's central west.

The 44-year-old was sleeping in a swag in the Bundaburrah Creek Recreational Area near Forbes when he was run over about 5am (AEDT) on Tuesday, with the driver failing to stop.

Police say the blue or green car involved was last seen heading towards the Newell Highway.

The man was taken to Forbes District Hospital then flown to Westmead Hospital in Sydney where he remains in a critical but stable condition with broken ribs and injuries to his hip and pelvis.
