Calls for public apology from magistrate who lost licence for speeding

Questions have been raised over whether a Geelong magistrate can rule on similar matters after he lost his licence for speeding.

An unmarked police car has apparently caused headaches for Magistrate Ronald Saines who allegedly lost his licence for speeding, News Corp has reported.

It is claimed he was caught more than 25km over the limit, leading to an automatic 28 day suspension.

3AW radio personality Neil Mitchell said he foresaw potential trouble, telling 9NEWS Magistrate Saines is "going to have trouble sentencing people at similar speeds in the future".

"He should set an example, he hasn't. He owes us an apology and an explanation," he said.

While Chief Magistrate Peter Lauritsen would not respond to questions from 9NEWS, he apparently told News Corp "I am satisfied he has performed, and will continue to perform, his duties as a magistrate properly".

Magistrate Saines also refused to respond to the request for comment made by 9NEWS.
