Call for special police force on unions

Attorney-General George Brandis has poured cold water on a push for a police task force attached to the royal commission into trade union corruption to continue after the inquiry is over.

A coalition MP told the joint government partyroom meeting on Wednesday the prosecutions arising from the royal commission should not be left entirely to state police to prosecute.

The MP said the royal commission's own police task force should be reconstituted as a stand-alone task force to follow up on the final report's findings.

Senator Brandis told the party room state police were already familiar with investigating and prosecuting the types of crimes being uncovered by the inquiry, such as bribery, stealing and corruption.

The commission, headed by Justice Dyson Heydon, has no public hearings scheduled and is due to report by December 31.
