Sydney’s two major stadiums to be bulldozed and rebuilt

The war is over.

Sydney is on the cusp of being gifted $2.3 billion in new stadiums after New South Wales Cabinet signed off on a final plan to be completed by 2021.

Allianz Stadium at Moore Park will be knocked over and rebuilt into a 45,000-seat stadium.

Work will begin at the end of 2018 with a view to open in 2020.

ANZ Stadium at Olympic Park will also be knocked over and rebuilt into a 75,000-seat rectangular stadium, with work to commence after the 2019 NRL Grand Final for a 2021 opening.

A 30,000-seat stadium at Parramatta is already underway and will be finished by 2019.

It’s expected the plan will be officially announced by Premier Gladys Berejiklian in Sydney tomorrow.

9NEWS understands the NRL has committed to keep the Grand Final in Sydney as part of the deal.

It was originally thought one or two would be taken to Brisbane or Melbourne while work is underway at Olympic Park.

The 2018 and 2019 Grand Finals will be played at the existing ANZ Stadium at Olympic Park. It will then move to Allianz Stadium in 2020, before returning to a brand new ANZ Stadium in 2021.

Opposition Leader Luke Foley questioned the government’s priorities.

“Anything above Mike Baird’s original $1.6 billion should be spent on schools and hospitals,” Mr Foley said.

The clubs who call ANZ and Allianz home will need to find temporary venues during construction.

The NSW Waratahs will play at the SCG and the new Parramatta Stadium while the Sydney Roosters will also play at the SCG with games on the Central Coast and interstate.

The Bulldogs will play at Parramatta and Belmore Oval while South Sydney Rabbitohs will play home games at Parramatta and interstate.

Sydney FC has flagged interest in playing out of Leichhardt Oval.

“We would love nothing more than Sydney FC to make Leichhardt home. It will reinvigorate Norton Street,” inner-west Mayor Darcy Byrne said.
