Cabbie accused of sex assault granted bail

A taxi driver accused of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old deaf girl has been granted bail.

Osman Chamseddine, 64, allegedly assaulted the girl on a number of occasions in 2009 while he was driving her to and from her special-needs school in Sydney.

He was arrested in April this year and charged with a number of offences, including aggravated sexual assault and an aggravated act of indecency.

In granting him bail at the NSW Supreme Court on Thursday, Justice Christine Adamson acknowledged the seriousness of the charges.

"If the offences against the applicant are established they show he seriously and grossly exploited her vulnerability."

But, she added, the risk he potentially posed to the community could be mitigated by strict bail conditions.

The court had also been handed an affidavit by Chamseddine's son who described his father in "glowing terms", she said.

Justice Adamson ordered that Chamseddine not drive a school bus or any other form of public transport, including a taxi, for people under the age of 18 while on bail.

He must also regularly report to police.

His matter will return to Campbelltown Local Court on July 9.
