Bumper-to-bumper traffic to leave Batemans Bay

Traffic is lined up bumper-to-bumper in the NSW South Coast town of Batemans Bay, as locals and tourists flee the town.

A reprieve in extreme bushfire conditions has given people on the South Coast a brief window to get to safety.

On the scene, 9News reporter Jonathan Kearsley told Today that supplies in the town were running out.

"There's no milk. There's no bread," he said.

"The service station operator says he simply can't get the trucks through."

And while power is starting to come back on in the area, there's more contingency plans being prepared.

"These are generators similar to what was used in Hurricane Katrina and the Boxing Day tsunami," Kearsley said.

"That should give some idea of the scale of this crisis."

And the electronic disconnect means service stations can only accept cash when people fill up.

"Mobile phone coverage has been restored to some parts but this service station is cash only," he said.

"If people do not have cash, they will find it very difficult to even get away."

The RFS has told tourists staying from Batemans Bay south to the Victorian border that they need to leave.

The stretch of land is more than 200km long.

"If you are planning to visit the South Coast this weekend, it is not safe," the RFS said in a statement.

"Do not be in this area on Saturday."

And Transport Minister Andrew Constance, who represents the area, has urged people to leave safely.

"Drive slowly, headlights on," he said.

"People need to take it carefully, be patient and respect each other on the roads."

Hundreds of homes have been confirmed lost in the South Coast bushfires, but the figure is certain to rise as authorities gain access to previously unsurveyed firegrounds.
