Fraser Island bushfire jumps containment lines as thick smoke billows across Queensland coast

A bushfire raging on Queensland's Fraser Island has jumped containment lines as it continues to billow smoke across surrounding areas.

Fire crews, including aerial bombers, are fighting the blaze that's burning through a remote and inaccessible area of World Heritage listed site.

A number of roads have been closed on the island and a Fire Advice Warning has been issued urging campers and residents to stay informed.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymor visited the island yesterday and said the fire was proving extremely difficult to control.

"It is a very, very difficult situation over there right now for our firefighters," he said.

"We have heroes over there, many of them volunteers, who are battling a fire in extremely difficult conditions that is very hard to put out.

The fire was sparked last month by an illegal campfire and has now destroyed more than 40 kilometres of bushland.

The blaze has sent huge plumes of smoke cascading across the Queensland coast, leaving residents and campers immersed in the dirty air.

"I couldn't believe it, we went to Lake Mackenzie on the Monday and you could see ash falling as we were swimming in the lake," camper Kristen Wessling told 9News.

"It was a bit weird."

The Bureau of Meteorology says days of heavy rain are needed to put out the fire but predicts that conditions are set to worsen.

Forecasters are warning that temperatures in Queensland could climb by 14 degrees over the next five days and reach 46C in parts of the state.

Tourists are still welcome on the island for now, but the mayor says people should stay away.

"I am urging people not to go over," Mr Seymor said.

"It's not a pleasant experience camping because of the smoke."

Fraser Island is the world's largest sand island covering 410,000 acres and more than 75 miles of unspoiled beachfront facing the Pacific Ocean.
