A bushfire in Western Australia's south that posed a possible threat to lives and homes has been brought under control.

The blaze in the Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes started between Tweed Road and Ford Road in Kangaroo Gully on Monday afternoon, and prompted a watch and act warning for people in that area and also Bridgetown Garden Estate.

Firefighters spent the night building and strengthening containment lines, and by mid-afternoon on Tuesday had brought the bushfire under control.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) said 92 hectares had been burnt.

The fire was started accidentally, DFES said.
