Bushfire alert downgraded for blaze at Guilderton, north of Perth

A bushfire burning north of Perth has been contained, as Western Australian crews remain on high alert on a day of severe fire risk.

An emergency warning was issued last night for people in the eastern part of Guilderton and properties north and south of the Moore River in the Shire of Gingin who were being threatened by a fast-moving fire that had started in state forest.

An evacuation centre was set up at Granville Civic Centre in Gingin.

This morning, the fire was contained by firefighters and the alert downgraded to an advice message. 

There is no threat to lives or homes but heavy smoke remains in the area. Residents are urged to stay alert and monitor their surroundings. 

Wanneroo Raod remains closed. 

Severe fire danger ratings have been forecast today for inland parts of the Midwest Gascoyne, including the towns of Moora, Mount Magnet and Meekatharra, as well as inland parts of the Goldfields Midlands region.

Authorities say conditions will be dry, hot and windy.

Residents have been urged to stay alert and have bushfire survival plans ready.
