Bus driver suffering flashbacks as teen in Box Hill crash charged

A veteran Melbourne bus driver who suffered a collapsed lung and broken ribs in a crash with a stolen police car, allegedly driven by a teenager, said he is still having flashbacks of the traumatic event.

Anthony Collins, 61, was driving an empty, out-of-service bus on October 16 when the Victoria Police car allegedly smashed into his vehicle in Box Hill.

“I feel traumatised, and also angry,” Mr Collins told 9NEWS.

“I get flashbacks of the windscreen of the bus smashing, and still get flashbacks of the car with the airbags coming out, and the loud bang.

“I had a lot of pain, I couldn’t stand, so I collapsed to the ground inside the bus.

The father-of-two suffered three broken ribs, a collapsed lung and needed 15 stitches to a laceration on his leg.

He is now facing eight weeks off work.

Police said the 16-year-old driver was on bail when he allegedly stole the unmarked police car and attempted to speed through a police intercept attempt in Station Street.

A police officer was forced to jump out of the path of the car to avoid being struck.

The driver was injured in the crash and was trapped in the wreckage for some time, with his teenage passenger also injured.
