Bus driver found guilty over crash that killed pair on scooter

A bus driver who was captured on CCTV multitasking behind the wheel in Sydney's south, has been found guilty of dangerous driving occasioning the deaths of two people.

The vision from the bus shows Luis Rojas grab a USB cable, read a piece of paper, use a ticket machine, adjust his mirrors and handle his mobile phone in the minutes before the accident at Kingsgrove in January 2019.

Rojas hit a scooter carrying Chen Guan Wei and his pillion passenger Su-Po Hsu as they waited to turn right off Kingsgrove Road that evening.

"The blinker was illuminated, and the brake light of the scooter was on," Crown Prosecutor Roger Kimbell told the jury.

"When I noticed the motorbike already it was too, I tried but it was too late," Rojas said.

At trial he told the jury he was blinded by oncoming headlights.

Rojas' defence barrister Varinder Pawar argued he was not driving dangerously at the moment of impact, and the events beforehand were not connected.

The jury took a day of deliberations to find Rojas guilty of two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death.

Rojas looked at the ceiling while a family member sobbed.

His bail was continued ahead of sentencing in December.
