"At the peak the whole road was covered in water, it was like a river," local resident Des Campbell told 9News.

As the water rose, it came close to entering homes.

"At one stage we honestly thought it was going to come straight through the house," Marilyn Campbell said.

"We now have a swimming pool in our backyard that we didn't have before."

One hundred and forty-two households were left without water as crews worked to repair the pipe.

SA water has apologised and says it will help customers to clean up the mess.
