Suburban roads are under water and at least 12 homes have been flooded in the inner west Sydney suburb of Dulwich Hill, after a water main burst.

Authorities are warning residents not to return to the area, with fears a sink hole may be forming under the water-logged Old Canterbury Road.

A NSW Fire and Rescue spokesman said the burst main had flooded 12 homes on the road.

In some backyards the water rose to waist deep, with appliances and furniture floating around.

Emergency crews are at the scene and have blocked off Old Canterbury Road and surrounding streets.

A Sydney Water team is also at the scene, trying to stop the flow.
