A busted water main flooded a road in Neutral Bay on Sydney’s lower north shore this morning, causing residents to evacuate their homes.

Emergency crews responded to reports of a major leak on Alfred Street around 5am.

The sudden deluge caused a nearby brick wall and footpath to crumble.

Local residents had to be evacuated as a torrent of water threatened their homes.

It took crews more than two hours to turn off the pipe and stop the gushing water.

No one was injured in the incident, but the large police and rescue response left surrounding roads busy for most of the morning.

Alfred Street North has now reopened in both directions, according to reports from Live Traffic Sydney.

Flooding has receded and the local council now faces a significant footpath re-build.
