Burns defendant needs medical treatment

A man accused of setting his former partner on fire in Sydney's CBD needs further medical treatment, his lawyer says.

Surachet Suksa-Ngachareon, 28, allegedly poured flammable liquid over the 34-year-old woman and set her alight at an apartment in Castlereagh Street on March 7.

The woman, named in local reports as Nataya Sripho, remains in a critical condition.

Suksa-Ngachareon was arrested at a home in Ultimo a short time after the alleged incident, and was taken to hospital for treatment under police guard.

He was charged with causing wounding/grievous bodily harm with intent to murder, and breaching an apprehended violence order.

Suksa-Ngachareon appeared in Central Local Court on Wednesday with one arm and hand heavily bandaged.

His lawyer Matthew Eddy said he needed further medical treatment but did not specify what for.

"I'll endorse the warrant for the defendant to receive medical attention while in custody," Magistrate Les Mabbutt said.

The case was adjourned for a bail application on March 24. Suksa-Ngachareon nodded and bowed to a person sitting in the court as he was led back to the cells.

Ms Sripho's parents are said to be considering coming to Australia from their home in northeastern Thailand.
