Bungee jumping teen died after mishearing 'no jump' as 'now jump'

Two members of a Spanish bungee jumping organisation have been found guilty of reckless manslaughter over the 2015 death of a Dutch teen.

Seventeen-year-old Vera Mol died after leaping from the Cabezon de la Sal bridge in Cantabria, northern Spain while her rope was still yet to be secured, after misunderstanding an instruction not to jump, The Mirror reports.

A court has heard an instructor for tour operator Aqua 21 Aventura shouted “no jump”, but owing to his poor English skills, Vera likely misinterpreted the phrase as “now jump”.

According to Dutch publication Omroep West, the court found evidence of gross negligence on the part of the two bungee jumping operators, who failed to both verify Vera’s age and request permission from her guardians.

Aqua 21 Aventura was also not licensed to organise jumps from the bridge.

Both operators face sentences of between one and four years in jail.
