Budget to include road funds for Adelaide

A major upgrade of Adelaide's north-south road corridor will be completed as soon as possible, ahead of its original 10-year timeframe, with funds likely to be allocated in Tuesday's budget, the federal government says.

Assistant Infrastructure Minister Jamie Briggs says he is confident that a plan will be outlined on budget night to ensure upgrade work on two major sections of South Road can proceed.

"That's what we're working towards," Mr Briggs told reporters on Thursday.

The work involves major redevelopment at Darlington, in Adelaide's southern suburbs and along a section of South Road between Torrens Road and the River Torrens.

Total cost of the work is close to $2 billion, with the funding split between the state and federal governments still to be determined.

However, the commonwealth is now hopeful of completing the work quicker than its original promise to have it done in a decade.

"We've been working very hard to make sure that this project doesn't take longer than it ought to," Mr Briggs said.

"I would hope that these projects can be underway and built as quickly as possible."
