Budget savings must be credible: Treasurer

Treasurer Scott Morrison has hinted the government may dump so-called "zombie" savings measures from the budget papers.

As of March 31 there were $12.7 billion in unlegislated budget savings slated for the next four years, some of which have been blocked by parliament since the coalition's May 2014 budget.

Mr Morrison said the government had passed $25 billion in savings since last year's budget, which represented about two-thirds of what it was seeking parliament's support to pass.

"Going forward into this (2017) budget, it is important the budget is a credible document, a practical document; it's a document that can be put forward with confidence to the Australian parliament for support," Mr Morrison told reporters in Canberra on Monday.
