Budget is assault on schools: SA treasurer

The federal budget is an unprecedented assault on South Australia's hospitals and schools, the state's treasurer says.

Tom Koutsantonis says seniors concessions and family support cuts also would have severe and immediate negative effects on the state.

Mr Koutsantonis said a special state cabinet meeting would be held on Wednesday when Treasury would provide a detailed briefing on the full implications of the budget for South Australians.

"The Liberal Party has turned its back on everyday South Australians and demonstrated that it only governs for the powerful business interests," he said.

But SA Transport Minister Stephen Mullighan welcomed the commonwealth major road development funding for the $896 million Torrens to Torrens and $620 million Darlington upgrades in Adelaide.

The two projects meant local jobs and industry involvement were secured over the next several years, he added.

Deputy SA opposition leader Vickie Chapman also welcomed the budget funding to upgrade the two key sections of South Road.
