Bruce Highway set for $150 million upgrade

The federal government will splash $150 million to upgrade a section of Queensland's Bruce Highway to help ease congestion.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is today expected to announce funding for the Murrumba Downs section north of Brisbane, which sits in Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton's electorate.

"As soon as we can get it constructed I think it will make a big difference locally," Mr Dutton told ABC radio.

The $150 million will create a new southbound entry and exit with two ramps, allowing easier access to the Bruce Highway that connects to the Sunshine Coast and Redcliffe.

The federal government's contribution will represent 80 per cent of the cost of the project, with the state government expected to fill the rest.

Mr Turnbull is in Queensland ahead of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, which starts tomorrow.

The $150 million spend is tipped to be part of a cash splash on Queensland in next month's budget, which will likely be the last before the next election.

Mr Dutton told the Courier Mail the Bruce Highway project would ease congestion to and from the Sunshine Coast.

"The rapid growth in the Murrumba Downs and Griffin areas means these new ramps will get massive usage and make travel more convenient for locals,” he said.
