Brit Tas NXT senate candidate ineligible

A Nick Xenophon Team candidate has withdrawn his bid to win a Tasmanian senate seat, admitting his British citizenship makes him ineligible to stand.

Nicky Cohen is second on the ticket for the party but has stopped campaigning for votes after realising his failure to renounce his British citizenship excludes him according to Australian Electoral Commission rules, News Corp Australia reports.

"I was negligent in my reading of the form. Although I don't believe it will have any consequences on the outcome of the election, I am extremely embarrassed," he said.
