A teenage boy has been charged with murdering the founder of multimillion-dollar clothing chain Universal Store at a house party in Brisbane's inner north.

The 15-year-old is accused of stabbing businessman Greg Josephson, 58, as dozens of teenagers celebrated the end of their school term at the mansion on Oriel Road in Clayfield.

Police were called to a home about 8.15pm on Thursday, where they found Josephson dead.

The boy was arrested on a street nearby.

Detective Acting Superintendent Craig Williams said about 30 people were at the home, including a large number of teenagers.

They say the 15-year-old was known to Josephson and was the only person believed to have been involved in the alleged murder.

It's understood it was the 15-year-old who called triple zero.

"I just saw kids come up and congregate and then walk back down the street," neighbour Patrick Gallagher said.

"Shocking, it's just unbelievable."

Another neighbour, Corinne Matthews, told 9News she was also in "absolute shock".

"There was nothing that could give... any indication whatsoever that this ever could have happened."

Williams said the alleged murder weapon had been located and that Josephson's death would have an impact on many.

"This is a tragic incident that will affect the family, the community as a whole and other young persons who were at the house at the time," Williams said.

He said a number of teenagers were taken to the police station in order for their parents to be contacted.

They are assisting police and were not involved in the incident, he said.

The teen has been refused police bail and was due to appear in a children's court.

The house remained a crime scene through the day.

Josephson founded youth fashion chain Universal Store with his brother Michael in 1999.

He was a director at Universal Store until it was sold to private equity investors in 2018.

The company was then floated on the ASX in 2020.

Universal Store released a statement expressing condolences to Josephson's family.

"We wanted to share the sad news that Greg Josephson, who founded our company and played a significant role until 2018, has recently passed away.

"Our sincere thoughts and condolences are with his family at this very sad time."
