AFL star Brian Lake set for release from Japanese prison

AFL star Brian Lake is set to be released from jail after assault charges were dropped in Japan.

The three-time Hawthorn premiership player has been held in custody in Osaka since Sunday morning after an alleged bar scuffle.

Lake was forced to go through a detailed apology process after the alleged assault, the Herald Sun reports.

In an extra step to have the charges dropped, Lake’s wife and children taped a video recording also apologising to the victim of the altercation.

He is expected to be released tomorrow following five nights in prison.

The 36-year-old helped the Indonesian Volcanoes win an AFL Asia tournament on Saturday and was said to be celebrating in the bar when arrested.

Lake played 251 AFL games, including 197 for the Western Bulldogs before he switched to Hawthorn.

He won the Norm Smith Medal as best on ground in the Hawks' 2013 grand final win over Fremantle.

Lake retired in 2015 and now works part-time in the media.

He has recently been in Fiji, filming for Channel Ten's reality TV show Australian Survivor.
