Finance Minister Mathias Cormann has said his government has a plan to keep Australia strong in the face of global uncertainty, including fallout from the Brexit.

The Turnbull government has a plan to ensure Australia is in the strongest possible position to deal with whatever comes its way, Mr Cormann told Sky News.

That includes the fallout from the shock decision by UK voters to back a British exit from the European Union (EU).

"Our opponents would put Australia in a weaker position on the back of bigger deficits, which economists say would threaten our triple-A credit rating," Mr Cormann said.

He said Australia was pursuing a free trade agreement with the EU, and his government's plan to return the Budget to surplus would not need to change in the wake of Brexit.
