Brazen robbers caught on camera making off with $700,000 in jewels in Melbourne heist

Brazen thieves have been caught on camera smashing in the side window of a car parked in Melbourne’s South Yarra area during a heist that saw them make off with more than $700,000 in jewels.

Detectives said the bandits approached the car, parked on Avoca Street, about noon on July 14 and smashed the window.

Despite the fact that two men were sitting inside the vehicle at the time, the robbers grabbed backpacks containing a haul of white gold and diamonds from the back seat.

Police have estimated the cache at worth $700,000.

The pair, who were both wearing black balaclavas during the heist, fled the scene in a blue Ford sedan and were see travelling north.

Victorian detectives said they the car was possibly being followed by a Mitsubishi Verada wagon as part of an elaborate operation.

In addition to the CCTV, police also released images of a man who was seen near a jewellery store on Toorak Road on July 14.

Police believe he could be linked to the theft.
