Bravery award for slain cop Damian Leeding

Slain Gold Coast police officer Damian Leeding will be given a posthumous bravery award for trying to stop the robbery in which he was fatally shot.

The 35-year-old detective died after Phillip Graeme Abell, who is serving life behind bars for murder, shot him during a robbery at the Pacific Pines Tavern on May 29, 2011.

Senior Constable Leeding and his partner, Sergeant Nicole Anne Jackson, entered the venue on foot with their weapons drawn.

Const Leeding scaled a fence and called out to the offenders to get them to stop.

He was then shot by Abell with a sawn-off shotgun.

Sgt Jackson performed CPR on her colleague but he died as a result of his injuries.

Const Leeding's wife, Sonya Leeding, will on Wednesday accept the Bravery Medal during a ceremony in Brisbane.

Sgt Jackson will also receive a bravery award for her actions that evening.

Eighteen other Queensland police officers will be honoured on Wednesday for their courage.

These include five who rescued four people from a burning vehicle and a group of officers who tried to save a man from a burning house.
