Melbourne teens praised for saving woman who fell onto train tracks

A group of private school students from Melbourne has been praised after helping to rescue a visually impaired woman and her guide dog from train tracks.

Just after 5pm yesterday the woman plunged onto the platform after a miscommunication with her guide dog.

"I don't think anybody realised that I'd gone down there until I called 'help'," the woman said.

She was attempting to travel towards the city on platform one, but somehow ended up on platform two.

Her dog was attempting to indicate her mistake when he may have led her onto train tracks.

Shocked witnesses rushed to help, including 16-year-old Harry Dettmann who jumped onto the tracks to pull the pair to safety.

"We've got to get her up ... just as quick as we can," Harry said.

"Just get there, help her, in case a train did come," witness Shobaba Satkunarajah said.

The group of students then waiting to board the next train with her to ensure she would arrive at her destination safely.

This afternoon the woman, who did not want to be identified, thanked the brave teenagers for rescuing her.

"Harry was my hero, he was putting his life ahead of everything else and that was just magnificent," she said.

The students will be recognised for their efforts at the next school assembly.
