Brave Melbourne police officer gives chase after being hit by own car
A police officer has been seriously injured during a pursuit through Melbourne's eastern suburbs.
The Senior Constable was chasing a speeding motorbike when level crossing boom gates dropped, forcing the rider to escape on foot.
The officer got out of his car and began to chase the rider when his car rolled, clipped by a train.
He suffered leg injuries when his own patrol car hit him, but continued to chase the offender before eventually catching up with him and making the arrest.
"The courage displayed by that member is absolutely astounding and after his vehicle being hit by a train, him being hit by the car having being involved in a pursuit at a high speed that he still managed to gain his footing and apprehend the offender," Acting Senior Sergeant Michele Clooney said.
The Senior Constable is in hospital with knee and hip injuries.
The suspect could be charged with conduct endangering life.
